Lawn Health Care

Get and Maintain a Healthy Lawn

Healthy Lawns in Bergen County, NJR&S Landscaping understands that a beautiful, healthy lawn is one of the most important aspects of your outdoor space. Many Bergen County homeowners value their lawn as much as their home since your lawn is one of the biggest parts of your home’s exterior look and curbside appeal.

Our annual program maintains the average healthy lawn and is effective in improving stressed lawns. On average, it takes two years to build a healthy lawn. In the first year, we concentrate on bringing current problems under control and improving existing turf.

Aeration and Lawn Thatch Removal

Producing small plugs (holes) in your soil, we will prevent compaction and promote better circulation of air and water. Fall aeration and slit seeding are a great way to add new life to a struggling lawn, as well as improve healthy lawns. Lawn aeration can be necessary for those who have a significant build up of lawn thatch, which is a layer of mainly dead turfgrass tissue lying between the green vegetation of the grass blades above and the root system and soil below the surface.

Lawn Soil Testing

Testing the soil of your lawn every two years allows us to adjust applications to address your lawn’s specific nutrient needs. The results of a soil test will tell you how you can reduce costly lawn maintenance items like water, fertilizer and pesticides. Sure, you can make a lawn greener by applying nitrogen-based fertilizers. However, too much nitrogen in your soil can also weaken the turf, leading to more disease and insect problems. Testing your soil will help us keep your lawn green and healthy.

Insect, Fungus & Weed Control

Our complete annual lawn health care program includes:

  • Fertilizer - 4 properly timed applications throughout the season with organic and traditional options available
  • Insect & Weed Control
  • Aeration for relieving compaction and improving root zones
  • Slit Seeding to add new seed directly into soil for optimal germination
  • Lime for pH adjustment as needed based on a soil test
  • Fungus Control for turf diseases

In our effort to limit the use of synthetic lawn care products, R&S Landscaping offers organic based fertilizers as an option to reduce chemical applications. These four fertilizations (applied in the Spring, early Summer, late Summer, and Fall) along with proper cultural practices will offer an option to allow our customers to act proactively based upon their needs and beliefs.

By choosing this program our customers will limit the amount or re-entry restrictions needed after pesticide applications. We believe it is very important to allow our customers to have options on how their lawn care is applied. The nutrients in organically derived fertilizers are obtained from living matter, including animal waste, microbes, plants, and other natural materials. There are many benefits to using fertilizers derived from organic sources versus synthetic fertilizers.

Lawn Health Care

In order to care for a lawn properly and limit chemical applications, Cultural Practices are the key.

  • Recycling grass clippings can give the turf up to one pound of much needed Nitrogen per 1000 square feet
  • Mowing the lawn at a minimum of 3” will help control some weed germination
  • Annual aeration and slit seeding will alleviate compaction and breathe new life into established lawns.
